Being ungrounded can feel like your head is in the clouds. You may feel distracted, disorganized, like you can’t get anything done. You might feel spacy, a little lost, lightheaded or even anxious. Sometimes your heels literally don’t touch the ground and you feel yourself teetering unsteadily on your toes. Being ungrounded can actually be dangerous depending on what you are trying to do when you feel that way. For example, I really wouldn’t recommend driving a car!
Because of the changing Earth energies, you may feel ungrounded at any time, but it is more likely that you’ll experience it after certain activities. These might include: after praying, a ceremony or ritual, meditation, a healing session, reading spiritual texts, yoga, or fasting. You may also feel it if you make a sudden switch to a more purified diet. People also frequently feel ungrounded after awakening to the spiritual or having a profound spiritual experience.
We lose our grounding when our energy is unbalanced, with too much in the upper chakras. It can happen after a sudden opening of the upper chakras, like being attuned to an energy healing modality or receiving an energy treatment. Or it can be the result of not working on the lower chakras. The truth is, there’s a bit of a high in being in the upper energy centers. Some spiritual folks prefer to consistently operate out of their upper chakras because they feel like they are more connected intuitively that way. This may be true, but they may also find that they have a harder time acting on those insights.
It is absolutely possible to keep the upper lines of intuition open while staying grounded, so you can get things done. It simply requires working on all of the chakras to keep them all open and staying evenly balanced.
I’ve had many of the ungrounded symptoms I described above. The first one I can recall was immediately following my Reiki 1 attunements. We were working on each other. I stood up after my turn on the table and I was giddy. I blurted out, “I’m walking on my toes!” I wasn’t trying to, I just was.
My Master Teacher said, “Whoa, come back here!” She got me back up on the table and grounded me with one of the techniques described below. I still felt great and was definitely still in my upper chakras, but enough energy had been brought down that I could again walk normally and function better.
9 Tips for Grounding
Here are some ways to getting your feet firmly planted on planet Earth.
- Connect with the Earth. Put your bare feet on the ground. Take a walk barefoot. Hug a tree (literally!). Touch something that is growing in the dirt. Walk on the beach. Have your lunch while sitting on the lawn at work. You get the idea.
- Get in Water. The ocean, a lake or a river are ideal, but any water will do. Even a bath will work. Epsom salt in the tub will help to pull out any stuck energy. Just make sure Epsom salt is okay for you. It is very benign, but it is contraindicated for pregnancy and some health conditions. Getting your whole body in the water is great, but even your hands or feet will do.
- Use Crystals. There are several stones that do a very good job of grounding energies for us. The first one is amber. It’s actually a tree resin, but it’s typically discussed with crystals when it comes to their healing properties. Other stones that help are aragonite, bloodstone, jasper, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, garnet, ruby, hematite, obsidian and apache tears. You can hold the stone or wear it in some form of jewelry. You can also put it in your pocket to use as a reminder to come back more fully into your body any time you feel the stone there.
- Use Essential Oils. Any oil that works to open the lower chakras will help to balance out the energy of the upper chakras. The oils basil, oregano and patchouli will be helpful. Simply smelling them or putting them on your wrists or anywhere else will help to ground you.
- Have a Partner Ground You. If you have someone around who has an idea about energy (it will work even if they don’t), have them put their hands about a foot above your head. They will be in your energy field. Have them slowly sweep their hands down your field and end with their hands on your feet. Have them put pressure on your feet to pull your attention to them as you feel them on the floor. They can then back away. This was the technique my Reiki Master used. I often use it before people get up off my Reiki table after a session. It is very effective.
- Focus on Your Feet. If you don’t have anyone around who can help you or if there are too many people and it’s not quite the time or place (think business meeting!), then focus on your feet. Put your attention there. Wiggle your toes. Press your feet into the ground. If you need further grounding, you can do the following visualization.
- Do a Grounding Meditation or Visualization. Imagine your consciousness at the top of your head in your crown (where it probably is anyway). Feel the warmth as you focus there. Use the next several breaths to breathe it down your spine, pulling some energy down with it. Imagine it going all the way down the spine and out the root chakra at the perineum. From there, breathe it down to the Earth and then down to the Earth’s core. Imagine it being planted like a root deep down inside the Earth. Feel the grounding. Feel the security. If you are adequately grounded at that point and you are concerned about losing too much of your connection to the Divine, you can imagine another cord going from the top of your head to a light way, way above your head where you connect with your highest source. Rest for a few moments in both of these places and then pull the roots or cords back in. You should be evenly balanced at this point. If you still feel a little unsteady after doing the grounding cord only, then stop there. You don’t need the additional connection; yours is already strong enough at that point. - Breathe into Your Root. Put your focus on your root chakra at the perineum and breathe a beautiful red light into it. Simply visualize this. If you can’t, just think about it happening. Feel the warmth growing there and imagine the light growing brighter, stronger. You will be effectively opening the root chakra and balancing out the upper chakras. If you need a little more energy in the lower chakras, use your breath and imagine an orange light building in the sacral chakra about two inches below the belly button.
- I hesitate to even give this suggestion because many of us already use food as a vice for grounding and so many other things. Use heavier foods. If you don’t have a balanced relationship with food, work on the reasons for that and use it for grounding as a last resort.
A little ungroundedness can be a welcomed thing, especially if you are a healer or psychic in a session, or you are in a ceremony or are meditating. But too much can be counterproductive and even dangerous. Strive to achieve a balance as you move through your life.
