Revisiting Borderline Personality Disorder By Christa Lore Urban This is the second in my series on BPD. My first article has brought attention and interest in this disorder. I would like to break it down into smaller pieces to provide some approaches that families and professionals can take to help these individuals. The first step is they must recognize they have a problem. Body, Mind and Spirit care is essential to overcoming this diagnosis. I group personality disorders as a form of soul sickness. We need to attack it down to the level of the soul. This psychological disorder cannot be overcome by medication alone. Medication is a temporary fix, it merely suppresses the feelings of anxiety, and it does not treat the causes. Coping strategies and anxiety reduction must be learned. The causes of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are unknown. Genetic, family, and social factors are thought to play roles. Risk factors for BPD include: • Abandonment in childhood or adolescence • Disrupted family life • Poor communication in the family • Sexual abuse People with BPD often have highly unstable patterns of social relationships. While they can develop intense attachments, their attitudes toward family, friends, and loved ones may suddenly shift from great love to intense anger and dislike. They live in constant fear of rejection and react dramatically to even simple things like a change of plans or being home while their partner takes a business trip. I love you, I hate you, I will kill myself if you leave me are part of the dysfunctional repertoire of the Borderline. They live in constant fear of abandonment and will attempt to manipulate situations to be in control and remain the center of attention. Narcissistic Personality can also accompany this disorder. The self abuse in this part of the cycle of abandonment and rage varies. Some may binge eat, others act out sexually or with other addictions, cutting and self mutilation are part of this cluster People with borderline personality disorder often have difficulties controlling their emotions and impulses, and find it hard to keep relationships. They can experience feelings of emptiness (abandonment trigger), then suffer quick changes in mood (rage) and they may harm themselves. Problems coping with abandonment and a rapidly changing view of other people can form part of their difficulties. All of these things make it hard to form stable relationships. These inner experiences often cause them to take impulsive actions and have chaotic relationships. This personality disorder shows more reporting in woman but can occur in men as well. The issue of abandonment crosses all socio-economic levels. The challenge of this individual is the same as the rest of the world; live without fear. There is a biochemical component to the fear scenario. The brain adapts and even becomes addicted to the chemical responses. If there is no excitement to the addicted neurons they create a scenario to amp up this brain chemistry. The brain needs to become addicted to the chemicals of bliss and happiness. This is where the work begins. Changing the feedback loop. The greatest challenge is overcoming the fear and understanding how emotion affects the reality that we are constantly in the process of creating. Here is the crux, we have a choice on what we create. God gave us free will to make the choice. Our emotions are a choice. The greatest lesson is learning that we live in a constant energetic state of love. We can live without fear or worry about life; we can create everything we need in the moment. The universe is always supporting us. When we connect with lower level energies we take on that vibration and feed into the fear and worry that things in our life will go away. The thought and energetic creation are set in motion and the worry feeds the fear and lack. The universe always rewards us with the energy we emit. So let go of fear and worry. Create thoughts in the positive realm knowing that you are supported. This is the first step in breaking down the negative cycling of BPD. Once we understand that there is nothing to fear. Creating the positive energy vibrations becomes easier. As with any behavioral change this is something that must be practiced daily and frequently. It takes around 30 days to set a habit with humans. Thus the 28 day treatment program models. Those with anxiety disorders of all types can work the same model of eliminating fear. Using prayer and meditation instead of anti-anxiety meds is an important step. Caution should be used in withdrawal of medications. Some of the benzodiazepine class must be weaned for safe withdrawal. Long term use of anti-anxiety meds may require professional drug treatment and rehab. These meds are physically and psychologically addicting. Seeking the services of a Holistic Practioner is beneficial. Correcting any nutritional or chemical imbalances in the body will help in the control of mood and behavior. The individual with BPD has constructed a world that is based in fear and loss. Overcoming the fear and understanding that they have a choice in the creation of their world. The pain and drama is a false construct of a fear based reality. Positive thought and connection to a higher power is the first step. You are supported and can choose to enjoy your life. One minute, one hour, one day at a time you can create a positive life. Make the choice when a fear based thought comes in, change the vibration to love. Live in unconditional love and support. One thought at a time. BPD behaviors can be modified and the personal discomfort eliminated. Spiritual counseling is very valuable in the treatment of this personality disorder. I offer counseling and do long term work with clients needing the support to heal and confront their issues. BPD does not form overnight, expect miracles but know that it will take work for everyone involved with someone that has BPD to make a recovery.
