Whilst walking in nature have you ever seen a quick darting movement, just outside of your peripheral vision? If so then you may well have seen a member of the elemental kingdom.

Elementals are known as the Guardians of Nature. They occupy a different realm to us, where they work together to safeguard the earth. The Elementals are governed by the four elements: Air, Water, Earth and Fire. This is the realm where the Wise Ones and Devas of the landscapes reside.

The element of Air is home to Imps and Sylphs. In Water reside the Mermaids, Sprites and Undines. Earth is home to the Tree Guardians, the Wisdom of the Stone Spirits, Crystal Devas, Faeries, Pixies, Elves and Wood Nymphs. The element of Fire is represented by Salamanders and Fire Djinn.

Elementals can actually be found everywhere, even in your home and this time of year is a great time to connect with them. This will give you an excellent opportunity to welcome fresh positive energy in to all areas of your life. To do this you can simply sit quietly and ask to connect with the spirit or Deva of your home.

Expand your consciousness and focus on how you are feeling, emotionally and physically. What are the first images or thoughts that you have? Sense the spirit of your home and ask what it needs.

Next tidy and then cleanse your home. Native Americans cleanse their environments by burning bundles of herbs containing white sage and sweet grass, releasing the healing properties of the smoke into the atmosphere. During this process the elements of fire, air and earth combine powerfully to remove any negative energy.

Creating a Faery altar can be a focus for connecting with the elemental kingdom. Each of the elements should be included in some way; a natural candle to represent air and fire, a stone or crystal to represent the earth along with a small water feature.  You could also include a representation of the spirit of your home on your altar to assist with deepening this connection.

Now, to spoil yourself make this a ritual and designate time to thoroughly nurture yourself. Go for a walk in whichever landscape appeals most strongly to you. It may be by the sea or in a wood. Take time to complete a meditation in your chosen environment. Connecting with the Guardian of a Tree is a powerful experience, as is connecting with a Water Spirit. Ask them to enfold you in their energy and cleanse you of all negative energy. Meditating at night and connecting with the energy of the Moon is also highly effective for clearing the mind, body and spirit. Never forget to thank the Guardians of the Elements when you have finished your meditation.

Upon your return home, continue your cleansing ritual with the elements. Take a soak in a bath filled with natural plant based products or essential oils. The natural healing properties of plants and herbs have been used effectively in many cultures for centuries. The spirits of flowers and plants can assist to nurture your creative energy and develop your natural healing ability.

To honour and empower yourself, put something symbolic on your altar that represents you and the positive energy you wish to manifest during the year. To continue the connection with the nature spirits and refresh the energy, position some plants and fresh flowers around your home.

In your garden, whatever its size, you can connect with the elemental kingdom in many ways. A particular favourite of mine is to create a Rainbow Tree. This consists of tying small pieces of coloured ribbon to the branches of a tree as gifts to the elemental kingdom and to ask for healing when needed. I also ask the Faeries to assist me in the garden such as helping my plants to grow strong. It is a good idea to let a section of your garden stay ‘natural’ and let the elements take over to create a haven for the insects and butterflies.

Once you have done the above you should feel lighter, positive and more focused. To maintain this positive feeling why not treat yourself and buy a new journal. In this you can record your thoughts and experiences of connecting with the elemental kingdom over the coming year.
