In the merry, merry month of May; there’s a lot to celebrate! May 1 is known world-wide as May Day, a celebration of spring and upcoming summer. Don’t feel like dancing around a maypole? Well, May 5 is Cinco de Mayo. In the U.S. this date celebrates Hispanic and Mexican pride and culture. Personally I can get behind May 6, International No Diet Day! This was established to appreciate the body we have and to take care of it in a healthy manner. May 13 this year is Mother’s Day. If your Mom is in Heaven, please honor her on this day. Don’t have children? If your kids have paws, wings, scales, or tails –believe me you’re a Mom! Mom’s do so much for everyone else and generally put themselves last. Ladies, we need to practice self-care! In case you’re wondering, I do love flowers, jewelry, oh and dark chocolate! Don’t worry Dad’s; your day is June 17. Enjoy!
In the U.S. we celebrate Memorial Day on May 30. It’s a day to celebrate the men and woman who gave their lives for freedom. It’s also a day to remember our loved ones who are no longer with us. It also marks the beginning of the gardening and summer season.
The topic this month is Family. What do you think of when you hear that word? Some of us have a close, loving family and some sadly don’t speak to family members. It can remind us of happy times but to others it may bring up painful memories. Is your family more like the Brady Bunch or the Addams Family; or something in between? Today’s family is becoming more and more diverse. Some have no blood relatives but they have great friends. Some families are like fudge – mostly sweet with a few nuts! Who’s to say what makes the best family?
China’s strict one-child policy transformed our husband and wife lifestyle into a very happy family with our adopted daughter. We feel blessed beyond measure! Even marriage in traditional China is being altered. A loving, supportive and equal spouse is now desired. Elderly folks in China are even adopting Western ways and are living in ‘rest homes’. The family dynamic is changing all over the world. So, what makes a family a family? I feel it doesn’t really matter who the members are in the family. What does matter is having mutual respect, good communications, effective boundaries, spiritual faith, love and a nurturing and safe environment for all.
I think this quote from Erma Bombeck says it all: “The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”
A family is forever. So whether or not you have family issues, Feng Shui regards this area of your home as the foundation for your life. It holds the energy of your past including the relationship with your family and family loyalty. Do you really want to be outside of the ‘circle of trust’ like Greg Focker in ‘Meet the Parents’?
Feng Shui asks you to look to your family roots and build upon that strength. This strong foundation provides you with confidence to meet challenges and make good decisions. It also brings peace, love and harmony to all. The Family area represents growth (children), well-being, new opportunities, spiritual growth and abundance. In Feng Shui, the color of the Family gua is Green and the element is Wood (think family tree). If it’s out of balance, it can negatively affect aspects of your life or cause physical issues with the feet, gallbladder, liver or throat. Yikes! Let’s quickly add good Chi to the Family area! This section of the Bagua is located in the left middle side of your home while coming in the front door.
Take a look at what’s in your Family space and let’s find out what you’ll need to build those strong family ties. Remember when placing items always set the intention of the outcome you want to create!
- Remove all clutter so it doesn’t cause family relationships to become stagnant
- Remove any metal items in this area. The symbolism is an ax chopping wood
- If you have white walls which represent metal, consider painting them. The wall in our family area is painted a light green
- Add green items here because this color holds the vibration of sturdy wood energy and is the color of hope, nourishment, and it promotes a positive attitude
- If you have a couch here, use green pillows or a throw
- Remove any round shaped items which represent metal. The element here is wood so think of a columnar shape, like a tree trunk. Pedestals or columns are good as long as they are not round shaped
- Remove white artwork or collectibles and replace with wooden statues
-
Place a happy family picture in a rectangle wood frame
-
Hang family photos here and don’t forget Mom
- Include photos of supportive folks who feel like family to you
- Place healthy tall green plants here or tall bamboo stalks
- Hang up a painting of nature that includes a large tree or a painting of 3 trees which is symbolic of family
- Add a few items in black or light blue to get the abundance energy flowing. Light blue represents harmony, friendship, faith and belief. Finances are associated with this gua because you need to support your family
Now that you’ve Feng Shui’d the Family area, let’s bring in our angelic helpers! You can call upon these Archangels for help with any family issues.

When I wrote this, I heard in my ear, “What about the Ascended Masters”? Ascended Masters according to Wikipedia are: “believed to be spiritually enlightened beings who in past incarnations were ordinary humans, but who have undergone a process of spiritual transformation.” They are here to teach us and all humanity. Although the most well known are Jesus, Mother Mary and Buddha; Ascended Masters come from all cultures, religions and civilizations.
While performing Feng Shui energy clearings, I ask Buddha and Quan Yin for assistance. Other Ascended Masters can also help so I ask for anyone else to step forward. When working with life coaching and holistic healing I ask for assistance from Jesus and Mother Mary. For help with family issues call upon Athena, Buddha, Damara, God, Forseti, Jesus, Mother Mary, Quan Yin or Saint Germain. They will surround you and your family with harmony, fairness, justice, forgiveness, understanding and peace, just ask them!
To me, family is the most important thing in the world! Feng Shui Family changes will help if your social life needs a boost, you want your family to grow healthy and strong or just grow! Transform this area if you need more abundance in your life and you want to improve relationships with family members. Please don’t forget Mom on May 13. She can take the place of others but they cannot replace her! My Mom has been in Heaven since November, 2003 and I still miss her! She has visited me several times and the angels have sent me signs to let me know she is happy and well. If your mom is not with you, make sure you place a picture of her in the Family area and even light a candle for her. She’s the most important lady in your life!
