“A hero is somebody who voluntarily walks into the unknown.” ~ Tom HanksApril began with April Fool’s Day, which is usually concerned with pranks – sending someone on a quest for something they already had or did not need. So it is with a hero. In the Tarot cards, The FOOL card usually represents a carefree soul merrily on the journey about to step off into the abyss – which represents the unknown. So often in our lives, we do everything and anything to avoid appearing foolish. Yet, most of us fail. At one time or another, we are all fools. We are guilty of foolish behavior, thoughts, ideas, goals – you name it, and later in life we recall the times we truly were foolish. We use various methods of coping, such as structuring our daily lives into a routine, behavior that is accepted by others, agreeing with relatives or friends even though deep-down we adamantly disagree – all so we will be loved, liked and not thought of as a fool. Oh, there are many myths and legends to support planning our lives when in actuality the most memorable moments or days in our life were the unplanned! When we change our routine and visit a different store, or take another route, and meet the love of our lives, or when we take a last-minute vacation alone to a foreign country and realize this is where you need to be and want to live. Most shun spontaneity – yet this is the spice of life!
“A hero is someone who, in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway.” ~ Christopher ReeveThis prompts us to question not only our past, but also our present. Each of us needs to ask the question if we have lived our life to the fullest – or have we settled, and simply existed? It is not something one needs to blame oneself for – nor is it something to feel ashamed. Questioning the status quo is asking these questions so we may be truly conscious individuals and consciously choose whether we are living life our highest purpose and fulfilling our soul’s prompting. We would all like to believe we have – but do we actually? How many times have you told yourself “I hate this job’? The actual wording does not matter – each type of this statement, no matter what it is about, is building resentment within your subconscious creating more discontent with other areas of life. If we feel ‘trapped’, we cannot reconcile this dichotomy. We can find no satisfactory resolution! Our energy begins to decline, we may turn to alcohol or drugs to numb the feelings – to shut out those nagging voices egging us to change – and make drastic changes. How do we reconcile the irreconcilable? We may not be able to change the job we hate immediately, but we can make plans to change our skills for a more rewarding career. What did you always dream of doing? What lights a fire within you when you dare to daydream?
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” ~ Ralph Waldo EmersonBegin today. Make a step-by-step plan. Set goals in concrete. In three months, this is going to be done. In six months, this will be accomplished. In one year, I will be ____________. Often we ignore the actual choices we may have. There are often opportunities for additional education in our preferred career. Asking a supervisor or someone, you admire to mentor you. Seeking out a college counselor and asking for assistance in a realistic plan. You might even make an appointment at your local unemployment office and ask what jobs are in demand – who knows you may just find your ideal career track. And yes, as I have quoted both Tom Hanks and Christopher Reeves above, “we need to voluntarily walk into the unknown” and take action even ” in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway.”! Amazing results manifest from confronting our own fears, doubts, and inner resentment. When we take action for transformation on any level, it is as though we were immersed in a thick fog and suddenly the fog lifts and we see clearly the path before us – the one each of us choose! On this journey of self-discovery and searching for answers – we discover as The Fool has, there is no ‘hero’ out there. We finally realize the hero is within each of us and the journey is of utmost importance – the journey of life is what makes life worth living!
