I wanted to talk about how our mind works to fool us, and how our heart works to guide us. This will be a five part series, which I felt was necessary to create because so many people live in their heads, and over think parts of their lives such as relationships, and their career choices.
Over thinking is caused by many factors that I will explore throughout the series, but they can lead to many problems and obstacles in our lives. They often lead to guilt, self-doubt, and other negative emotions that only succeed in holding us back.
We are so geared by what society tells us is right and correct that we go to war with ourselves.
On one side is reason:
You should not, cannot, will not be with that person, in that job, etc.…
It is wrong.
It is immoral.
You are a bad person.
What you are doing and feeling will lead to a bad life.
One the other side- Your HEART:
I love him/her.
I love this kind of work.
I am attracted to that person.
I want to do the work that I know I should be doing. .
I am not suggesting anarchy, what I am suggesting is if we follow our heart through love, how can we be wrong? Our mind is a recording that plays pre-selected programs. While it is not something we control, as these programs are important, we can change what the recording is.
For instance, suppose you want to be a singer in a band. Here are the recordings:
School Counselor: You sing well, but you cannot do that for a living.
Mom: I love your voice, you sing like an angel. That is a wonderful hobby.
Dad: You need to make money, stop that silly band stuff.
Society: There is no money is music. In this economy, you need a real job.
The lists goes on. We absorb these messages to be true. This is the “illusion.” I named this series illusions, because illusions exist in our minds, however, our hearts are quite clear on the subject. The trick of course is to replace those negative messages with the ones that our heart is broadcasting:
“You are alive when you sing. You are the happiest when you are with the band. You were meant to sing. You were given a gift from God to sing beautifully. Your voice brings others to tears. At the end of a performance you are on the top of the world.”
This message of the heart is buried deep within. We feel it like a small pain. We feel it like lump in our throat. We feel like a hunger pain. Yet we cannot not fill it because we are fighting it. We are using the same old excuses based upon fear that keep the illusion alive. In this case, the illusion is that singing is just a hobby you can do on a weekend when you have time from your real paying job. When the illusion is shattered and replaced with the clear seeing of the heart, literal miracles happen every day.
I am working with a young girl and her mother. The girl is painfully shy, she is starting to slip in her grades and her outlook in life is that the universe has something against her. She feels that she is not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough… She has a secret gift. She is funny. I mean, really naturally funny. Her mother recently asked me if she should look into acting/modelling. I said absolutely, because this was a really bright path I saw for her. It was hard for her mother to see, because of the seemingly depressed and shy girl she sees every day.
She took her daughter to an audition with some agents. They were again not sure because she was shy and quiet. That girl got on stage, and blew them away with her monologue. They said they had not seen raw talent like that in 30 years. The girl, is on top of the world. Once the illusion was shattered with success and a willingness to try, the universe burst with possibilities for her. I can’t wait to see her on the comedy channel soon!
In the next part of the series, we will dissect fear, where it comes from, and how to begin to combat it.
