The cosmos is in a cardinal relationship with justice.
By Cheryl Atim Alexander
When the human beings inhabiting planet earth treat each other with compassion, equality and integrity, while extending such regard to all living entities, the world can enjoy relative equilibrium. Hence, the intentional practice of natural virtue begets a harmonious living environment. When we operate with justice, not only are we demonstrating our recognition that all life has value ~ we are also understanding that all life is sacred.
When certain people and areas of the Universe undergo extreme suffering as a result of human rights abuses, environmental degradation and other discretionary acts, this naturally opens the door for other negative, large scale incidents ~ which may appear to be unrelated to those in our consciousness ~ to arise. In essence, the world reacts negatively to oppression, and as such, when oppressive acts are inflicted on individual and collective systems, a negative ripple effect occurs which often has far reaching, harmful consequences.
Holistically minded health practitioners recognize the interconnectedness of the human body, and understand that illness in one body system or organ is either a cause or an effect of illness in another body system or organ, primarily because the body systems and organs are inextricably linked to one another through various channels such as blood vessels. With that said, the ability to recognize the interconnectedness of the Universe will make it easier for us to understand that pathology in one global system can be the cause or effect of massive chaos and dysfunction in another.
Unfortunately, many areas of our world are not operating with justice, and this has been the case for as long as most of us are able to remember! It is not going to be sufficient for many human beings to continue to sit on the sidelines; within many sectors of the spiritual community, there appears to be a strange disconnect between social justice and spirituality. In such settings, it is often implicitly and explicitly conveyed that spiritual people are not supposed to “fight” for anything. However, people who are genuinely seeking a spiritual existence must realize that to claim a spiritual and/or peaceful identity without being prepared to duly pursue, engage and heal the uglier side of human nature (both within us and outside of us) is misguided, to say the least. Spirit is concerned with the whole Universe…and this includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It is simply not acceptable for any of us to continue to use spirituality as an excuse to bury our heads in the sand!
Similar to the preceding references to cause and effect relationships, it is important to note that something similar may be perceived between social virtue and spirituality: We cannot effectively pursue social justice without a (subjective) awareness of ourselves as evolving spiritual beings, and we cannot abundantly pursue spiritual growth and development without due attention to issues of social virtue (or the lack there of).
Now is the time that we have to take action to restore physical, mental, emotional and spiritual equilibrium to our struggling world.
Remember: It is never too late to act, and no action is ever too small!
