Children love to hoop! When I am at different venues the children are always the first ones to ask if they can hoop. And once they’re in a hoop, it’s very hard to get them out. I’ve seen parents waiting endlessly on the side lines for their children, wondering if the child will ever be done. Children literally begging for just 2 more minutes. Why is it that children love to hoop? Why is it that adults have a harder time exploring this fun pastime? Why is it that almost all children can hoop so easily, while adults struggle so much? It’s actually very simple. Children love to play. They love to laugh, have fun, explore and try new things. Children are also very in tune with their bodies. They know what they like, what they don’t, what feels good, and what’s fun. And they definitely are not afraid to tell you! Hooping offers all of these components. Have you ever seen a child in a hoop not smiling? My name is Heather Plyler, President/Founder of my inspired business called Soul Hooping. I am a certified Radiant You Hoop Meditation Instructor for children and adults. I have an early education background which I have used to work with children in various settings, private preschools, day care centers, head start programs and elementary schools. Being a mom of four and using my knowledge of teaching, I learned very quickly the benefits of hooping for children. I would like to explore with you why children benefit so deeply from hooping, and why it’s important for your child to have an appropriate hoop that works for them. Hooping offers sensory input through the hoop rotating around the abdominal area; specifically vestibular and proprioceptive. When using the body rocking method in the hoop, the children receive centered energy, gained focus, and awareness. They build self-confidence, develop personal boundaries, and use their newfound core strength for improved posture and body control. They also develop a feeling of safety and trust within themselves and sleep is improved. Most importantly, they begin the journey of mindfulness. All of this while having fun! Now let’s talk about the importance of the proper size and weight of hoops for children. Most of the hoops that are on the market for children are too small and too light. A hoop needs to be a certain weight for the body to receive sensory feedback and for the mind to process these impulses. The hoop also needs to be a proper fit for the child. Not every hoop is made for every child. Just like an adult has a very difficult time using a child’s hoop, a child would not use an adult hoop. So how do you know what size hoop is right for your child? Let me walk you through these steps so your little star can shine bright!
- The hoop is measured between the navel and high chest.
- Using the hoop sizes below, take a measuring tape and measure the distance from floor to chosen hoop size.
- If the measuring tape reaches anywhere from above the bellybutton to the mid chest you have found the right size.
- If the measuring tape goes just above the belly button, considering going up to the next size hoop.
- The perfect fitting hoop will measure roughly between the ribs and at the mid chest line.
