Motherhood. There is nothing more challenging. There is nothing more sacred in this world than the bringing of life, the rearing of young. Motherhood in all its forms is an honor of the highest calling. It is also a calling of the highest difficulty.
At the first sign of conception a change takes place within a woman’s body. All the energy, nutrients and resources that were originally going towards the growth, development and continuation of the woman’s body now go towards the fetus. It is as if a light switch was flipped and everything that went one way now goes another. It causes extreme consequences in some, minor in others. But all ‘feel’ the change to some degree. This change is not merely physical. Psychologically the shift occurs as well. The focus on self, friends, social, career changes to ensure the survival of the infant. Whom the woman is surrounded by and who will be there to support her becomes critically important. A sense of family, a sense of community, a sense of fellowship ensues. (Even for those single career ladies this happens!) The sudden realization from self to baby is life altering. It is immense. It is intense! It is incredible and miraculous and unbelievable! Motherhood causes hormonal and body changes that should have a sub-specialty of therapy and healing all to themselves! At the same time it has very real, very important and very practical implications. Having a child changes your life forever. No longer are you simply your own individual. You are now somebody’s only means for survival. You are it! It makes you grow up very quickly. It is a magical and miraculous moment. Now, we are not saying all parents are perfect, whole and enlightened beings. Far from it! Parenthood can try the best of patience, drive you to the brink of what you believe you can handle and test the very fiber of you. It is life’s greatest challenge and one not to be taken lightly. It drives the best people to the worst places and back again, all within the span of one day! Children are challenging. Parenthood is difficult in the best of times and motherhood is the test of all tests. But most would say it is all worth it when they look at their children smile, when they see that beautiful face asleep curled up in covers, when the kisses and hugs come to comfort and the giggles dance through the night air. Most would say it is an absolutely fantastical dance through the walk of life. Because it is. Raising children brings the greatest joys and the highest heights. It is not a test one needs to go through alone. It is a task that needs, calls for and derives the greatest rewards from teamwork. Children do need a tribe to survive. And so do the parents! It is time as a world that we begin to embrace each other again as families. It is time we begin to honor the task of motherhood as the sacred commitment it is. It is time we stop judging and start loving. It is time we joined together as a tribe of humans to give each other the support and caring we need to face the impossible challenge of raising children! And it is time we begin to find compassion not just for those who are struggling, but for ourselves as well. Parenthood is messy. Motherhood is miraculous. As a society, as a tribe, it is time we came together to support each other in these ever changing times. So the next time you look at your children, the next time you hug your nieces and nephews, the next time you see a mother in the grocery store on the verge of lashing out at the two year old throwing a tantrum, have some compassion. Have some empathy, for yourself, for the parents and for the world that supports them. It starts with you. Whether you have children or not, think of one way you could create a more loving, kind and compassionate attitude towards parents and their children today. What is one way you could find compassion and love for a mother you know? How about for your own mother? How about for yourself? The biggest changes in the world begin at home. Let it begin with you! And may the blessings of motherhood outweigh the challenges during this the month of mothers! Honor the mother within. Honor the mothers you know and honor the choices of mothers. There is no right or wrong. We are all in this together. We are all one world family! Love and honor to the mothers who dedicate their lives to the love and life of children!~W~

You know me so well, in times of need simple truths so evident the haze of confusion disappears. Your wisdom comes not of age, but experience as a guardian angel through many lives, although powerless to help some, you give out more than you take in. It’s a hard job, this angel thing, though you take it so modestly, crediting others far before your time. But the truth of the matter is, it was your perseverance, your values, your love, that brought forth their wisdom to today, to me. You are among all living creatures the most powerful and yet the strength you posses you rarely see. But it is not by sight that we are affected, purple or red, black or blue, we see you all as equals. For light from an energy connects heart to mind, reality of an angel’s wings hovering through time, you shine invading all those around you with a sense of peace and righteousness. I can still hear the beating of your heart with every breath I take. For I know that no matter where I am, or where you are, we are connected, a tie of life one cannot separate with time. For you will always not only be my mother, but an angel with heaven sent wings. WORD PLAY copyright 2002 Jeannine Proulx ]]>
