“Resolve is simply re-solving.” ~ Jussta
We all make New Year’s Resolutions, but how many of us keep them? Some we keep for a day, others for a week, usually not as long as a month. So where does all that determination and resolve dissolve? Why can’t these resolutions so well-intentioned last? Is it because we have not solved the habit or the pattern previously and want so much to begin the New Year anew?
How can resolutions be real solutions for those of us who want to confirm and affirm our consciousness in the year of 2014? First of all, we need to make fewer promises to ourselves. Focus on making two or three promises to yourself. Take it one day at a time, sometimes, only an hour at a time.
Set our priorities for this year. Every goal needs a deadline, or it will never be reached. Someday, becomes one day – and that turns into no day.
Can you even recall last year’s New Year’s resolutions? Most of us cannot. We would rather forget them. All those days, hours, weeks, 12 months have passed as if in a flash. We mean to take each day and make the most of it, to take steps to reach our goals. Life gets in the way. Those menial tasks of cleaning the house, doing the laundry, cooking meals, washing dishes, making the bed, paying bills, and grocery shopping leaving little time to even recall our resolution to this year somehow do it differently.
Life is a puzzle. It does not come with an owner’s manual. We each do the best we know at the time. How many times this year have you chuckled at your own behavior or lack of knowledge? When did you fall into fear and anxiety, rather than choosing love and confidence that all will work out?
We all do it. We all know we do it. We make resolutions to lose weight, eat healthier foods, not to drink so much alcohol, or none at all, to stop smoking, to be a better person. Those are very general resolutions. What is needed is a deadline. A date when we must accomplish what we resolve. We need specifics. I resolve to lose 20 lbs by June 1. I will eat one healthier meal a day for the next forty days. I WILL be a better person by being more compassionate, more loving, more honest each day for the next 40 days. I REFUSE to fall into negativity or depression. I choose to be optimistic for the next 40 days. I WILL NOT focus on what is lacking in my life for the next two weeks (insert date).
I resolve to be an asset to my community by volunteering so many hours a month (insert amount of hours) for (insert charity or organization) every month for six months.
I resolve to walk the dog four times a day for 15 minutes each day for 6 weeks. I promise to play with the dog for ten minutes in the morning and at night for 3 weeks.
I resolve to clean out my closet, to donate clothing and accessories to a charity within the next three months. I further resolve to clean out my closet every quarter of the year.
I promise to clean up the clutter in my life for the next month. Each time I open a drawer, I will ask myself, do I ever use this? Do I need this? Could someone else use it? Is it time to toss this into the trash or the recycle bin?
I resolve to use a timer when I am on social media to make room for pursuing creative projects for the next 40 days.
You get the idea. Now make your own list, be concise, be specific, set a timeline and I would wager that this is the year you keep your New Year’s resolutions which are promises to yourself.
Resolve to solve the problem of not keeping your resolutions through the entire year. Keep a log or a journal each week, if not each day – or write your accomplishments on a large paper calendar. Look at it. Congratulate yourself. If you backslide, begin again. It is not about never missing a day or two, it is about being consistent and persistent. You can do it! I can do it! Let’s do it together. Let’s change ourselves, our behavior, and our patterns so we change the world, one person at a time, beginning with self.
