“It’s the holiday season….” I love the holidays and there are so many to celebrate this month. Hanukkah, The Festival of Lights, begins on 12/16 until 12/24. In the Christian faith, we celebrate Christ’s birth on Christmas Day, 12/25 and of course Santa Claus comes to town. Boxing Day is celebrated on 12/26 in the U.K, Canada and Australia. Kwanzaa, which honors African culture and traditions, begins on 12/26 and ends on 1/1/15.
The Winter Solstice is on December 20th. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, this marks the longest night and shortest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, they celebrate the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Solstice makes me happy because the days are longer and that means more sunlight!
In China, the Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi) is celebrated as the “Winter Festival.” In ancient times, the emperors would worship ancestors in Heaven and the common people would pay their respects to their parents and elders. In many parts of China this is still celebrated.
The season of winter is Yin energy which is characterized by darkness, night, feminine energy and intuition. It’s the opposite of the bright, energetic and male Yang energy of summer. Winter is usually a dark stormy season which represents the element of Water (rain and snow).
Naturally people spend more time indoors and hopefully will allow their spiritual nature to flourish. You might want to keep a journal of your intentions and blessings, meditate, call upon your angels for guidance and contemplate your life purpose. It’s a time for introspection and transformation so make the most of this quiet time and get ready for the New Year and rebirth!
Holiday Décor: December activities can definitely cause you to feel overwhelmed with shopping, wrapping, cooking, partying and overeating! Let Feng Shui principles make the holidays more enjoyable!
- Remove any clutter and pack away everyday décor items
- Add outdoor lights and festive decorations to welcome guests and good Chi
- Display only items and decorations that bring you joy and happy memories
- Hang a wreath with a red bow on your front door for good luck
- Offset the bright blinking Yang holiday lights with soft lighting and tea lights
- Limit overhead lighting which can drain your energy
- Bring in blue, white, silver and green décor to balance the Fire of bright red
- If you use a fireplace, hang a mirror above it to balance with Water energy
- Diffuse balsam fir, orange, cinnamon or spruce essential oils of the season
- Bring in nature; fresh greenery, real mistletoe and poinsettia plants
- Swag garland so it turns upward like a smile to add more fun
- If your front and back doors are in alignment, hang mistletoe from the ceiling to slow down the Chi from running right out. Mistletoe also removes any negative energy. Remember to give your sweetie a kiss too
- The tree is a Wood element so balance it by adding ornaments in Earth (yellow, brown, clay or crystal). Water (black, blue, wavy and glass). Metal (white, silver, gray, round, metal). Add some Fire (red, hot pink, purple, triangles) since the tree and lights have enough of this energy
- An ideal spot for the Christmas tree is in the Family area (left middle side of your home). This represents the strength and growth of your family
- Other areas for the tree are Wealth (back left corner), Career (by the front door for good luck and keep it watered), Health (center of your home) for good health. If this isn’t feasible, display your tree in any area of your home with the intention of love, good fortune and family happiness
- Don’t despair if you have an artificial tree! Set the intention that it represents a tall, strong and always healthy family
- Say a prayer, blessing or use the Reiki ‘Power Symbol’ to send beautiful flowing energy to every room of your home
- Place an angel on top of the tree giving thanks for their love and protection
- If you want to Feng Shui your tree, use the Bagua map as a guide to hang ornaments in the specific colors or themes for each area
- Create a space for boisterous children to play away from the adult conversation
- Eat healthy so holiday foods, drinks and goodies don’t upset your digestion
- Take a walk or a nap for a nice break from the hectic festivities
- Pay all your bills this month so you can start the new year without debt
- Make time for yourself to relax in a lavender salt bath
Holiday Angels: If you read my column monthly you know how much I love angels! They are so much more than a pretty picture on a Christmas card! Angels or ‘Spiritual Beings’ are mentioned in almost every written religion on Earth so they are non-denominational. They are messengers of God/Source/Higher Power. Take advantage of this quieter time of year to connect with your angels, read about them, or receive a lovely reading. They can help us with everything in life if we just remember to call upon them. When you display a picture or statue of an angel it can really lift your spirits! Angels, fairies and even cherubs bring peace, spirituality, love and protection into your home.
If you’re traveling for the holidays, call upon Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael for safety and protection. Sadly, holidays do not always bring out the best in people so call on Archangel Raguel to quickly heal a heated situation. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, ask Archangel Azrael to bring love and solace. Ask Archangel Jophiel, the Feng Shui Angel, to help beautify your home and transmute any negative energy into light and joyful energy.
