This story is about a hotel that I stayed in whilst running a workshop in Glastonbury.

This hotel is an amazing Gothic building which dates back to well before the 15th Century. On this occasion I had friend and student Nicki Honey with me who was riding ‘shot gun’ to get some extra experience.
We booked into the hotel, collected the key to our twin room and started to unpack. Right away though, I could feel as if we were being watched. I glanced upwards at the heavy oak beamed ceiling and instantly could clairvoyantly see a dangling noose. It was then that I realised that Nicki had stopped arranging her luggage and was also staring up at the same point. “There’s someone hanging” she whispered. We were both very excited and it wasn’t long before ‘the hanged man’ was telling us his story.
First of all, he wanted to show us how his death had felt (Spirits often do this). Out of respect we complied feeling first thumping and pressure headaches, difficulty in breathing, and then a brief feeling of panic. All very mild I would imagine compared to what this poor fellow would have gone through. We thanked him for sharing and then listened to his story that had ended with his suicide.
He explained to us that he felt he had no choice but to take his own life. His problem had started after he’d arrived back in England following working at sea for many years. Unable to get legitimate work he took up an offer to work for an ‘unsavoury caricature’ who’s business was smuggling. Obviously, because of his knowledge of ports etc., our now resident ghost would have been an asset.
To cut a long story short we were told that he was tricked and swindled by his new employer and ended up in terrible debt. Unable to find the cash to repay, and fearful of what would befall him if he didn’t, he’d gone on the run. Eventually the fear of capture and retribution had become too much for him to cope with. Having no loved ones to turn to, he decided to end his life. For him it had been for the best. The hanged man had been good company and I know he enjoyed sharing his tale. We were also confident that he was now at peace so we said goodnight and decided to start to get ready for bed.
Nicki opted for the first shower and I remember thinking she had been in there a long time when a bedraggled head popped round the bathroom door. “Can you give me a hand; I can’t get the shower to turn off.” Well neither of us are ‘fragile flowers’ but, try as we might, we couldn’t get the tap to budge. We decided to call the Manager for help. He was most apologetic and very helpful, but he couldn’t do anything to rectify the situation either. By now it was very late and as a gesture of good will he told us we could have the hotel’s best room. Brilliant!
Room 8 was massive. It was an en-suit with two massive four poster beds along one wall and one small single bed by the window. Nicki and I chose the four posters, turned off the lights and jumped into bed, snuggling down to hopefully get a good night’s rest. Suddenly I began to feel most uncomfortable. I am well used to ‘dark energies’ and don’t usually find them particularly frightening (within reason), but the Spirit that was then hanging over my bed was quite another thing.
Looking up I could clearly see about a meter over my head a mass of what looked like swirling black smoke. It contained what looked like a large stocky male figure morphing in and out. “Is something up,” Nicki inquired. I told her that there seemed to be a negative entity targeting me. “Oh don’t talk rubbish,” she laughed. No sympathy for me it seemed.
I tried saying the Lord’s Prayer but the shadow was up for a battle and blocked my thought process. Then it dropped like a stone until its oppressive energy was bearing down on me with smokey coils enveloping me, a dark shadowy face smirking. I felt that in life he’d been a bare fist prize fighter with a real dislike of women.
“That’s it,” I grumbled, “I’m changing beds. I’m not putting up with that all night.” Nicki thought it was hilarious – that is until she decided to try lying on the bed herself and felt him looming. It didn’t take her much time to move! Luckily for us though he seemed to be a ‘haunting Ghost’ and moved in a fixed pattern. He seemed to act as if there was a wall half way across the room. There may have been in his day. So although we could still sense his energy, he was no longer a problem. Once more we settled down and started to doze.
Then, “Did you see that?” asked Nicki. All around the room were flickering lights and sparkles. It was fascinating. Once again we felt a presence. Nicki started to hear a voice. “There’s a lady here,” she explained. “She tells me that she’s waiting for her lover. She’s having his baby and they’re unwed. He’ll be here soon and they’ll go away together and it’s going to be perfect.”
No sooner had these words been spoken than the ‘sparkles’ began to form into the figure of a beautiful young woman dressed in a pale blue dress. She had pale grey eyes and flaxen hair tied up in a twist. I could see her really clearly. By her attire it was clear that she’d been ‘haunting’ for a very long time. At least 200 years. There was a feeling of joy and excitement around her. Sadly we never found out her story because as soon as we started to explain how long it’d been and that she should be moving toward the light and the spirit world she gradually faded away. She just didn’t want to know the truth. I don’t suppose her lover ever came for her and that was why she was still waiting; bless her.
It had proved to be a most interesting night. We didn’t get much sleep though, I have to say. But I have to admit of all the places I’ve stayed, OR investigated, The George and Pilgrim is my favourite.
