This book may seem like a quick read but it is packed full of information. We all search for happiness – unless we have already figured it out!
By Janie Manasco
I was given the opportunity to read the book The Happy Mind by Kevin Horsley and Louis Fourie. The word ‘simple’ used in the title has a lot to do with being happy in our life. It describes how we should live, act and react. We complicate everything to the point that happiness becomes a very difficult subject and it shouldn’t be. Very few can catch it and pin it down or “pen” it down as the authors did so well in this book.
If we knew the origin of our unhappiness, we could be on our way to living a happier life. This book pretty much clears that up and with some very interesting surprises which we all need to hear.
How is it possible that two people could be living the same life experiences yet one is unhappy while the other person with the same life is very happy?
A quote from the book says: “The same life is constantly a flower for some and a weed to another.” There are many reasons this could be, and they are all addressed within the pages of this little gem of a book.
In the book we learn how our subconscious mind can play tricks on us with the play of negative issues within our mind thought. It helps us to heal those issues and change our thinking to bring about a happier thought process. This then begins to change our outlook of a situation resulting in becoming happier with our life experiences.
I have been studying some of the words of Dr. Joe Dispenza from his videos on the subject of happiness and the subconscious mind so, this all relates with me.
In reading this book, I was pleasantly surprised at how much information the authors pulled together on the subject of Happiness. Not only the amount of information, but also, none of it was ‘fluff’ just to fill up pages.
The mind and the thought life are finally being truly looked at in a scientific and understandable way. It’s no longer a secret behind the desk of a psychologist. It felt as if the author already had the answer. I give this book 5 stars!

Janie Manasco has been a medium and empath since early childhood. She learned through her personal journey the vital importance of knowing oneself and of paying attention to the ‘inside’ as much as the outside of self.

The happy mind is a well written, practical guide to positive thinking.
As a spiritual life coach, it appealed to the “reframer” in me. I was impressed by the easy to read style of the book. The way it promotes positive thinking, awareness of the here and now and encourages the reader to “appreciate compulsively,” is appealing and doesn’t patronize the reader.
It examines the differences between happiness and unhappiness, providing easy to follow practical exercises to assist the journey to a happier existence.
The happy mind also reminds us that “happiness is work,” and breaks down the “ingredients of happiness.”
I found this book to be a great reminder that positive thinking is an ongoing skill to be mastered and worked towards.
The author questions the reader, “Are you the responsible guardian of your own life?”
I’m grateful for all of the well written and practical advice within this book and would not hesitate to recommend it to fellow therapists and clients alike.
