Are You Ready For Reiki? Your mouth is dry and your body aches. Feeling tense and tired all of the time, your Doctor prescribes some anti-depressants. While these are helping, you still have the nagging notion that your body and soul needs some healing from a qualified therapist. The problem being, there are so many to choose from, how do you make up your mind where to place your trust and your hard earned cash? A good friend tried a Reiki treatment and spoke highly of it. You want to try but don’t know enough about its origin. So what exactly is Reiki and where did it originate? Dr Mikao Usui was the original founder of the Reiki healing movement. Accounts of his life differ. Some say he was a Buddhist monk on a twenty eight year quest to discover the healing methods of Buddha. Others say he was a Christian Headmaster and minister at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. His students asked him to demonstrate his belief that Jesus performed miracles and healed people which began his search for answers. In the USA, he studied Theology, then Buddhism until finally returning to Japan to study the Buddhist scriptures. He learned Chinese and Sanskrit, the ancient language of India where Buddha was born. Here he discovered symbols to describe Buddha’s healing techniques, but this alone was not enough. Usui needed the ability to heal. Taking himself away to the sacred mountain site of Kurayama, he fasted and meditated for twenty eight days. On the final day, a beam of light appeared just before dawn. This light became intense, hitting him in his third eye, knocking him unconscious. As he recovered, he saw the Buddhist symbols vibrating in front of him and his entire being was infused with light and energy. On his return journey, he fell and injured his toe. Automatically putting his hand over the wound, he was surprised to see all bleeding and injury heal instantly. This was his sign and in a future meditation he was told to go to the slums and heal beggars. Expecting them to then go on to get jobs, he was dismayed to find the same old faces returning for healing. Although their bodies had healed, their minds had not because it was easier to remain a beggar than to face the responsibility of change. He left the slums and went on a pilgrimage across japan carrying a torch to bring ‘light’ to the people. While travelling he lectured about Reiki in temples. This is where he met his successor, Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer. After Dr Usui died, Hayashi became the grand master, opening a Reiki clinic where he practiced healing until the outbreak of World war Two. As his mission was to heal and not to kill, he allowed himself to simply slip away into a peaceful death. Mrs. Hawayo Takaya became his successor. Born in Hawaii in 1900, she was a widow with two young daughters. Her stressful life manifested as Asthma, Gall stones and a tumor which she attended surgery for. Praying for guidance, she heard a voice telling her to have healing. During surgery another voice told her there was another way. Her doctor informed her his sister had been healed by a Reiki practitioner. Curious, she booked in and was healed by two men. The heat coming from their hands astounded her and after four months of daily treatments she was cured. For one year she lived with the Hayashi family while learning Reiki healing techniques for herself. In 1937, Mrs. Takaya established Reiki in Hawaii which she taught in the USA and Canada for forty years. Reiki healing is now practiced and received by many people all over the world. It is a gentle, noninvasive treatment which raises the vibration of an individual to allow healing energy to flow through them. With its rich and fascinating history of hard work, unconditional love and dedication, Reiki deserves to be a popular form of healing. Why not give it a try? It could change your life for the better.
