I am a natural witch although I have built my abilities into some stability with both Wicca and Paganism. This does not have to be the case. Many natural seers and those in divination do not identify with Wicca or Paganism. Some are devoted Christians. The definition of a natural witch or one with special abilities according to my understanding is this:
Natural Witch or one with special abilities: A person with seemingly supernatural abilities and strengths that have come naturally to him or her without the aid of ritual or association of occult knowledge. These can include but are not limited to: Pre or Post cognition, long distance seeing, telekinesis, abilities with animals or plants that are above normal, a natural understanding of the Universe, ability to see or communicate with the dead, and an above normal ability in the kitchen, or an ability to heal. Of course this list is not all inclusive, but natural witches or those who have special abilities, do seem to have a lot of these abilities…or even just one or two of them. Many times these abilities are random and without any control at all. This is enough to drive parents and children wild with frustration, fear and a real concern with what they should or should not be involved with.
Most natural witches (or those with special abilities) discover their abilities as children, though some come into their powers during adolescence or later as adults. No one really knows how this comes about, but there is a general agreement that puberty can bring on interesting changes in the psyche. Children and teens who exhibit the natural magical tendencies need a lot of support and involvement with and by their parents especially. This is a frightening and exhilarating time for them. It’s all very new and the more understanding and tolerance a parent can show over it, the more likely the child or teen can incorporate it into their daily lives. Thus, it will become less frightening to everyone involved, and will take less of the families over all time to deal with. To deal with these paranormal things in an otherwise normal child takes personal security, knowledge, and patience. To deride it or declare it un-true only makes matters worse and creates an insecure and angry child or teen. This is not a good way towards family harmony or their over-all development as secure independent adults. All children and teens are interested in being unconventional. It may be the opposite for a child who is genuinely different or just introverted. If a child is not forthcoming with what is happening to them, it can be a difficult thing to identify.
Most natural witches (and those with special abilities) are discouraged from their abilities as children by parents, religion, teachers and peer pressures. Knowledge is power. The more you and your child understand about their new found abilities, the more likely they will be able to incorporate it into their life, learn about it, use it to the good for all (and move on to bigger and better things). Whether or not they choose to show it to the world is their choice. But they should be educated that their choices to tell people, who are not ready to hear, can have long lasting repercussions on them and their families and they need to consider their actions and their choices. This is good advice for all children and teens, not just those who have special talents or abilities.
Often new abilities exhibit themselves unconventionally. Seeing your child in a long conversation with the family dog or with someone you can’t see is uncomfortable sometimes. But, the difference can be made by involving yourself in the scene. Sometimes valuable insights can be gotten there. Don’t encourage it or discourage it…but let your child see you are aware, and he is safe. If a child has questions about his/her abilities…answer the best way you can. If you don’t know the answer, say so…but that you will investigate and find out. These actions are comforting to your child and reassures them that they are not crazy nor are they sick, and you are in control (even if you feel like you might not be.) Remember this is tough for brothers and sisters too, and don’t disregard their feelings about it. They may be having issues too or even have some of the same experiences and haven’t spoken about them.
If these are things you are experiencing, talk to someone who understands, read articles like this one, or Google* it and just start from scratch if you really don’t trust anyone concerning it. (It’s ok; I started from scratch myself when there were only a few books out there.) But, start finding information. Your inner guides will let you know what is good information…and when to be suspicious. (A good clue to be suspicious is when someone tells you their way is the only way.) It is my personal opinion that good advice and direction can be retrieved from Bellespirit Magazine and those that are featured in it and Belle Salisbury herself. Sometimes radio shows such as Ztalkradio.com offer helpful advice and tips for the searcher. Sometimes information can be gleaned from a person you know to be involved in personal search or “gasp” the library or bookstore (New Age section). But, do go looking. The information you need will come to you; sometimes all at once, sometimes a piece at a time. Trust in the Universe.
Finally, if your child is acting out, angry, or exhibiting actions that are dangerous to him or to others, it’s time for professional help. Your doctor can point you in the direction needed for psychological help and counseling. It doesn’t mean your child or teen is crazy, it means they’re not coping with their life and help is needed to facilitate that, before things get out of hand. This is true whether or not your child is experiencing new abilities or just having a tough time at home or at school, or is a sibling of a child who is exhibiting new talents and they are not.
I will be exploring what it means to be a Ceremonial and an intuitive witch in coming columns as well as some explanations of our beliefs, ideals, and how some of our magics work. I am working with some other witches as well, to give you a balanced view of who and what we are. I hope to see you there. Thank you to all well wishers and to you especially…dear reader.
