Now that I have re-captured my boat by seeing how I had allowed others in the past to hop in and steer for me, leading me to places and destinations I would have not gone myself, I am overwhelmed by the enormous responsibility of being the captain of my own ship. With my ore in hand, I am bombarded by the many choices and decisions that are placed before me, countless paths, and infinite possibilities. Since I have never truly made my own choices before, how do I begin to know what direction is best for me?
As I contemplate what to do next, my eyes are drawn to the bow of my boat where the words “Know Thyself” are engraved. Yes, that’s it, the next step before I set sail is self-inquiry. So I began asking myself a series of deep questions like “who am I?” “What am I passionate about?” “Why am I here?” “What have I come here to do?”
I believe that each person has his or her own individual answers to these questions which depends on a variety of factors, like personal experiences, ancestors, and upbringing. For example, my home life growing up was uncomfortable and dysfunctional, so it is extremely important for me to create a harmonious, loving and comfortable home environment for myself and my family. Or the fact that I had highly controlling parents, so I find myself being very passionate about human rights, equality, dignity and freedom for myself and everyone else.
I hope that my own self inquiry has helped guide you back to your own boat, perhaps you found yourself steering someone else’s or realized that others were steering yours. My wish is that you recognize your own freedom, as well as the freedom of others. I will also leave you with another tip which you may find helpful as you embark on your journey…there will be times when you will have to ask for some direction, follow your intuition, and remember that some will want to steer you in a direction that directly benefits them, where others will truly want what’s best for you. There are also some really great salesman out there, sometimes so good that they make you believe that their way is the only way. Remember your most important tool, your free will. Do what feels right to you, and make sure you bring a good pair of binoculars to help you discern and see clearly. Good luck and safe travels.
